Why Finding the Right Legal, Tax & Insurance Professionals in Portugal Matters (and Mistakes to Avoid)

Portugal is welcoming, but the paperwork side can be unforgiving. Legal matters, taxes, and insurance aren’t areas where “a friend who knows someone” is enough—small errors (or missed deadlines) can turn into fines, delays, or long-term issues that are expensive to fix later.
Here’s why the right expert matters, and the mistakes I see expats make most often.
- Portugal’s admin system is detail-driven: Common areas where people get caught out include IRS annual tax returns, IMI property tax and related obligations, business activity registration, insurance requirements (home, car, health, liability), residency and immigration processes (AIMA), and contracts governed by Portuguese law. When something is filed incorrectly, it’s not always obvious immediately—sometimes it shows up months later.
- Not every professional is expat-ready: A “good accountant” for locals isn’t automatically the right person for international scenarios. Many providers don’t deal with cross-border income or tax residency situations, aren’t comfortable explaining complex topics in English, or don’t specialise in the exact issue you have (property, business, inheritance, etc.). Specialisation matters more than most people expect.
- The “cheap/informal advisor” trap: The lowest price often comes with the highest risk: missed deadlines, poor documentation, vague advice, or work that isn’t properly accountable. With taxes, contracts, and insurance, you want clarity and paper trails—not guesses.
- Assuming your home country’s rules apply: Portugal’s approach can be very different (and the differences matter) for tax residency and capital gains, matrimonial property regimes, inheritance rules, tenancy contracts, and insurance requirements and coverage terms. You need someone who understands Portugal and how expat situations work.
- Don’t skip credentials: Always verify the basics: OAB registration (lawyers), OCC / Contabilista Certificado (accountants), and ASF accreditation (insurance brokers). It’s a simple check that filters out a lot of risk.
